Mexico and the U.S. coordinate new border projects

Monday 23 October 2023

According to the Ministry of Economy, the two governments re-started face-to-face meetings of the Binational Bridge and Crossing International Group (BBBXG), holding meetings in San Luis, Arizona in November 2022; Las Cruces, New Mexico in March 2023; and in Washington, D. C., in July 2023, to coordinate border infrastructure and modernization projects.

On September 12, 2022, the United States and Mexico held the second annual DEAN meeting, which highlighted both countries' commitment to strengthening North American supply chains and regional competitiveness, particularly through the U.S.-Mexico semiconductor and information and communications technology supply chain ecosystems.

The two governments also committed to investing in border infrastructure and modernization projects through the U.S. Congress' enactment of the Infrastructure and Jobs Investment Act, which dedicates $3.4 billion to 26 major construction and modernization projects at land ports of entry, and Mexico's commitment to invest $1.5 billion in border infrastructure between 2022 and 2024.

The new Otay Mesa East port of entry, the modernization of San Luis and the attention to the border infrastructure system in Laredo are some examples.

"Particularly on the semiconductor issue, Mexico and the U.S. are working (on) how to complement each other in that technology, in order to have the strongest semiconductor chain and optimize all the Information and Communications Technology markets," said Raquel Buenrostro, Secretary of Economy, at a conference in Washington last Friday as part of the Third Annual Meeting of the DEAN.
