Before the pandemic, aviation carried 4.5 billion passengers and 60 million tons of cargo on around 40 million flights, generating jobs and sustainable careers for 88 million people around the world and a contribution of 3.5 billion dollars to the planet's gross domestic product, said Dr. Fang Liu, secretary general of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
"In addition to these macroeconomic indicators, we cannot forget that aviation provided basic quality benefits to the lives of global citizens, thanks to the diplomatic cooperation of states in international aviation," said Fang Liu.
For example, aviation allows exploring the ecological, historical and cultural diversity of the planet, as well as reconnecting with family and loved ones, the ability to travel quickly and safely to any part of the world.
In total, aviation contributes to 15 of the planet's 17 sustainable development goals.
